Backups, file formats and recovery

Keep independent copies and understand export differences.

Updated 21 October 2026 · Steps describe the prepared Windows apps. Options vary by document mode.

Keep a native backup

Export .folio, .ledger or .stage to a folder, external drive or backup location you control. These native files are designed to retain the app’s own editing data. The automatic local working library is convenient, but it is on the same computer.

Keep the original file when importing Word, Excel or PowerPoint content. Work on a separate saved copy when the document is important.

Choose the right sharing format

AppEditable native backupCommon sharing formats
Folio.folioDOCX, PDF
Ledger.ledgerXLSX, CSV, TSV, PDF
Stage.stagePPTX, PNG, PDF

PDF is a reading/printing copy, not a complete native editing backup. CSV and TSV are plain tabular formats and lose features such as workbook styling and multiple sheets. Exact Office compatibility is not guaranteed.

Find versions and recover carefully

Ledger and Stage offer saved versions/checkpoints under Review. Folio includes history and snapshot tools in its document workflow. Review a version before restoring it, and export a backup of the current work first when possible.

Undo is for changes in the current editing session. A local checkpoint, an exported backup and the original source file serve different purposes. Do not assume one replaces the others.

Move to another computer

Export native files on the old computer, copy them using a method you trust, then use File → Open → Browse this computer… on the new computer. Copying a shortcut does not copy your saved library.

Customer license/device activation is separate from document transfer. Final production activation and device-management instructions will be confirmed when public sales open.
