Folio: documents and pages
Open Word files, edit text, control pages and export carefully.
Updated 21 October 2026 · Steps describe the prepared Windows apps. Options vary by document mode.
Open a Word document
- Choose File → Open → Browse this computer… and select the DOCX file.
- Folio opens imported Word pages directly in its editing area. Click in the body text to begin editing.
- Check the fonts, cover art, headers and page breaks before making extensive edits.
- Keep the original DOCX and export a separate native .folio backup.
Folio retains the original Word package and applies supported edits to it. It does not provide Microsoft Word’s complete layout engine: pagination, complex floating objects and advanced features can differ. It protects unsupported changes rather than silently converting the original layout.
Format and review text
Select text before choosing Home tools such as font, size, bold, italic, underline, color or alignment. Use a paragraph style for headings so an outline can identify them. Native spelling checks completed words in the editing area; right-click an underlined word for available suggestions.
Use Ctrl+F to find text and Ctrl+Z to undo. Press Ctrl+Shift+P to find a command. Review tools vary for original Word files: a tool may explain that it needs a Folio-created document or a separately created editable copy.
Set page size and margins
For a Folio-created document, open Layout and choose page setup, size, orientation or margins. Ruler handles adjust page margins and paragraph indentation; dragging a paragraph indent is different from changing a page margin.
Imported Word pages retain source page settings. Some layout changes are protected in this mode. Do not convert your only copy just to unlock a tool.
Use a page break to start content on a new page instead of pressing Enter repeatedly. A section break defines a section boundary for section-specific layout; support depends on the current document mode.
Headers, footers and border art
For Folio-created work, use Design → Headers & footer and Design → Page borders. Page-border options include decorative presets and image-based art. Section-specific controls let supported documents use different page designs.
Word headers and anchored artwork are retained from the source package. Editing these structures can be restricted when a change cannot be applied safely to the original file.
Change the workspace or the page
Click Theme beside Ribbon to change the app’s colors. For a neutral dark app, select Dark → Black & Gray. This does not change the document.
For document styling, use Design → Themes. For paper, choose View → Themes & paper → Paper backgrounds. Paper and decorative settings change the document; they are different from app themes. Imported Word files may protect those tools to retain source formatting.
Save and export
Use Export → Folio document for an editable backup. Use File → Save Word or the Word export option for DOCX. Use the PDF/print tools when a fixed reading copy is needed.
For imported Word files, exact PDF export can use Microsoft Word when it is installed on the computer. Other layouts and exports should be reviewed page by page before distribution. Keep your original file unchanged as a separate backup.
