Ledger: spreadsheets

Enter data, use formulas, style ranges and share a workbook.

Updated 21 October 2026 · Steps describe the prepared Windows apps. Options vary by document mode.

Create or open a workbook

Use File → New for a workbook, or File → Open → Browse this computer… for XLSX, CSV, TSV or a native Ledger file. An XLSX import does not guarantee support for every Excel feature; check formulas and formatting after opening.

Enter and edit cells

  1. Click a cell and type. Use Enter to move down or Tab to move right.
  2. Press F2 or double-click a cell to edit its existing value.
  3. Use the formula bar for a longer entry. Press Enter to apply it; Escape cancels the current edit.
  4. Drag across cells to select a range. Use the address box for a range such as A1:C12.

Press Ctrl+Z to undo and Ctrl+Y to redo. A cell’s displayed number format is separate from its underlying value.

Work with formulas

Start a formula with =. For example, put 20 in B2 and 30 in B3, then enter =SUM(B2:B3) in B4. The expected result is 50.

Open Formulas → Function guide for the functions this app supports. AutoSum helps total a range. Fill down and fill right copy formulas with relative-reference adjustments. Advanced Excel functions, macros and external links may be unsupported.

Apply a table style

  1. Select the range you want to format.
  2. Choose Home → Table styles.
  3. Pick a decorative style and choose header row, alternating row colors, last-row emphasis or borders as needed.
  4. Apply the style. Values, formulas and number formats stay in place; Undo restores the previous appearance.

Use Theme at the top for app colors. Theme changes do not change the saved colors of your cells.

Sort, filter and validate

Open Data to sort, filter, set validation rules, add conditional styling, summarize values or remove duplicates. Check the intended range and whether the first row is a header before applying a data operation.

For a chart, select the relevant range and choose Insert → Chart. Use Layout → Freeze top row to keep headings visible, or Fit column widths to size columns to their contents.

Save, back up and share

Ctrl+S saves the current workbook in Ledger’s local library. Use Export to save an independent .ledger backup or an .xlsx for sharing. CSV stores plain tabular values and does not preserve a full workbook’s multiple sheets and formatting.

Use Review → Saved versions for available checkpoints. A checkpoint in the same local app library is not a substitute for an external backup.
